Kitchen Packing 101

Out of all the rooms in your home, your kitchen is likely to be the space that presents the most challenges and frustrations when it comes to packing for a major move. If the process of sorting, packing, and labeling the many items in your kitchen has you feeling overwhelmed, then be sure to take a look at the tips featured below. Here is a crash course in kitchen packing 101:

Moving house: Young couple unpacking kitchen dishes

Prepare All Breakable Items Separately
One reason why packing the kitchen can be so agonizing is that it contains countless items that are delicate and breakable. To avoid damaging plates, glassware, and other delicate items, be sure to wrap each one separately in several layers of newspaper before packing them into an appropriate box from your local storage center.

Cushion Your Boxes
In addition to placing your dishes and glasses in their own separate layers of tissue or newspaper, be sure to cushion your packing boxes in order to further protect your items from breaking. Several great options for cushioning include plastic grocery bags, canvas bags, and shredded paper.

Purge Anything You Don't Need or Love
Before packing up the contents of your kitchen, be sure to ask yourself what you can live without. You may find that once you get to your new home, you don't actually need all of the items that you had in your old kitchen. Consider selling or donating gently used items and throw away any items that are broken or badly damaged.

Be Specific When Labeling
To prevent confusion when unpacking, be sure to carefully label each box. Instead of simply writing “kitchen”, add what type of items are inside the box, such as plates, pans, or canned goods. This is also an effective strategy to use if some of your items will be placed in storage temporarily or long term.
